Definition

Insomnia conditioning is the process by which the bed and bedtime become associated with wakefulness, frustration, and effort — producing a learned insomnia that persists even when acute stressors resolve.

Why it matters

Chronic insomnia is often as much a learning problem as a physiological one. Understanding this reframes treatment.

The Science

The 3P model (predisposing, precipitating, perpetuating factors) shows how insomnia becomes chronic through conditioned associations and maladaptive coping. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I) is first-line and outperforms medications in long-term outcomes.

The NSI Perspective

NSI treats chronic insomnia as a nervous system that has learned wakefulness in bed and can be helped to unlearn it.

Clinical Implications

CBT-I should be offered before, or alongside, sleep medications for chronic insomnia.

Practical Application

If your bed has become a battle zone, that is not a character flaw. It is conditioning. It can be un-conditioned.
