Inflammation and Fatigue within immunology and inflammation — the science, the human experience, and why it belongs inside a Nervous System Intelligence framework.

Definition

Fatigue is one of the most consistent behavioral effects of inflammation. Chronic inflammation produces a persistent, biologically driven tiredness that is not simply lack of sleep.

Why it matters

People with inflammation-driven fatigue are often told to “rest more” or “push through.” Neither serves them. Naming the biology reorganizes care.

The Science

Cytokines act on brainstem arousal systems, basal ganglia, and reward pathways to produce fatigue, reduced motivation, and slowed processing. This is documented in cancer, autoimmune disease, chronic infection, and post-acute infection syndromes.

The NSI Perspective

NSI takes inflammatory fatigue seriously as neurobiology. It is not laziness, and it does not resolve by willpower.

Clinical Implications

Distinguishing depressive fatigue, sleep-driven fatigue, and inflammatory fatigue changes treatment. All are real; each has different levers.

Practical Application

If sleep is not fixing your exhaustion, another system may be talking. That is worth investigating, not overriding.
