Definition

Hypervigilance at bedtime is the nervous system’s protective refusal to relax at night — elevated arousal, scanning, worry, and physical activation that make sleep onset difficult.

Why it matters

For many people with anxiety or trauma histories, sleep is not neutral. Naming bedtime hypervigilance as autonomic biology (not a moral failure) opens the door to real intervention.

The Science

Sustained sympathetic activation and cognitive rumination delay sleep onset and fragment sleep. This pattern is elevated in insomnia, PTSD, and anxiety disorders, and is measurable in autonomic and EEG data.

The NSI Perspective

NSI treats bedtime hypervigilance as intelligent protection that has outlived its usefulness. The task is to help the system feel safe enough to release.

Clinical Implications

CBT-I, autonomic regulation practices, wind-down rituals, and, when indicated, targeted medications can help.

Practical Application

If your body braces at bedtime, this is old wisdom trying to keep you alive. Slow signals of safety — warm light, warm bath, quiet routine — speak the language it understands.
