Definition

Hormones and mood interact bidirectionally. Estrogen, progesterone, testosterone, thyroid hormones, and cortisol all shape emotional experience — and mood shapes hormonal patterns.

Why it matters

This is one of the most under-taught areas of everyday medicine. Better literacy prevents both misattribution to hormones and dismissal of legitimate hormonal contributions.

The Science

Mood shifts across cycle, pregnancy, postpartum, and menopause are real and measurable. So are effects of thyroid dysfunction, testosterone changes, and glucocorticoid dysregulation. None fully explains mood alone.
