Definition
Heart rate variability (HRV) measures the variation in time between heartbeats. Higher HRV at rest is generally associated with parasympathetic tone and cardiovascular health. It is not a direct measure of emotional safety.
Why it matters
HRV has become a consumer metric. Understanding what it measures — and what it does not — protects users from misinterpreting daily fluctuations.
The Science
HRV correlates with autonomic balance and predicts some health outcomes at the population level. Individual, daily readings are affected by sleep, hydration, caffeine, illness, movement, and menstrual cycle.
The NSI Perspective
NSI uses HRV as one input among many, never as sole evidence of nervous-system state.
Clinical Implications
HRV data should support, not replace, clinical assessment. Chasing a single number can distort behavior.
Practical Application
If you track HRV, notice trends over weeks rather than reacting to single days. The variability of the variability is normal.
