Definition

Within Nervous System Intelligence, grief is treated as biology and love — an integrated response of a nervous system that formed a bond and is now living without the person or thing that bond attached to.

Why it matters

This framing honors grief without medicalizing it and without romanticizing it.

The Science

Contemporary bereavement science supports grief as multifaceted — attachment, memory, prediction, meaning, and physical health all in play.

The NSI Perspective

NSI holds four commitments in grief care. First, grief is a response of love, not a defect. Second, no timeline is universal. Third, continuing bonds are legitimate. Fourth, prolonged grief disorder is real and treatable when it occurs.

Clinical Implications

Effective grief care meets the person where they are, resists both minimization and over-medicalization, and offers specific treatment when specific pathology emerges.

Practical Application

Your grief is not a problem to be solved. It is the ongoing shape of love in the absence of the one loved.
