Definition

Grief dreams are dreams involving the deceased that are common, meaningful, and often distinctly vivid or comforting. They are a well-documented feature of bereavement.

Why it matters

Grief dreams are sometimes dismissed as coincidences or read as literal supernatural events. A middle path — respect for their neurobiological reality and their emotional meaning — serves grievers best.

The Science

Bereavement is associated with distinctive dream patterns. Dreams involving the deceased are often rated as comforting and meaningful by bereaved people. Their neurobiological substrates involve REM-related emotional integration.

The NSI Perspective

NSI treats grief dreams as legitimate output of a nervous system integrating loss during sleep.

Clinical Implications

Ask about dreams. They often carry material worth attending to.

Practical Application

If you dream of someone you have lost, this is real inner life. Let it in gently.
