Definition

Gait is the pattern of walking. It reflects the state of the nervous system, joints, muscles, cognition, and confidence — which is why gait changes are often meaningful.

Why it matters

Gait analysis is one of the most under-used clinical tools available. Small gait changes reveal a great deal about function and prognosis.

The Science

Gait speed is a well-validated predictor of health and survival in older adults. Neurological, orthopedic, and psychological factors all shape gait.

The NSI Perspective

NSI treats how someone walks as part of who they are today — and worth attending to.

Clinical Implications

Gait screening in clinical practice yields high-value information.

Practical Application

If your walking has changed, do not ignore it. It is often the first visible sign of something worth exploring.

Before you go

Two quiet questions.

How much of what you just read named something you already know inside your own body?

How much did this open a new question you didn’t have before?
