Definition

Fear learning is the rapid, robust, evolved capacity to acquire associations between neutral stimuli and threat. It is asymmetric in speed and durability compared with safety learning.

Why it matters

Understanding the evolutionary asymmetry between fear learning and safety learning clarifies why fears form fast and dissolve slowly — and points at treatment.

The Science

Fear conditioning appears in nearly every species tested and is one of the most-studied phenomena in behavioral neuroscience. Its persistence and generalization are protective in ancestral environments and problematic in some modern contexts.

Practical Application
