Definition

Within Nervous System Intelligence, family systems science is one of the primary frames. Individuals are always in systems; every symptom is, at some level, a system report.

Why it matters

This framing prevents both over-blaming of individuals and over-blaming of parents. Systems are neither innocent nor guilty — they are patterns to be understood and, where needed, changed.

The Science

The convergence of Bowen, Minuchin, Boszormenyi-Nagy, Gottman, Johnson, and attachment neuroscience produces a robust integrated view of how relational systems shape individual nervous systems.

The NSI Perspective

NSI holds four commitments in family and relational care. First, the individual is always in system. Second, the system is intelligible. Third, differentiation — not cutoff, not fusion — is the aim. Fourth, repair is the core skill.

Clinical Implications

Systems-informed individual work outperforms narrowly individual work in many situations.

Practical Application

Your struggles are not yours alone. They live in the systems you grew up in, the systems you live in now, and the ones you are building next.
