False Memories

Definition

False memories are recollections that feel like memory but do not correspond to actual events. They can be induced by suggestion, imagination, repetition, and social reinforcement.

Why it matters

False memory research is essential for clinical humility, legal integrity, and the honest study of memory. It does not disprove real trauma; it does require care about how memory is elicited.

The Science

Loftus and others have demonstrated that plausible false memories can be created in laboratory settings, sometimes with high subjective confidence.

The NSI Perspective

NSI holds real trauma and false memory as separate questions. Both are documented phenomena. Neither should be denied because of the other.

Clinical Implications

Clinicians should avoid suggestive techniques and pay careful attention to how they elicit memory.

Practical Application

Hold your own memories with respectful humility. Real experience matters. So does the reconstructive nature of memory.
