Definition

Extinction learning is the process by which a previously conditioned response gradually weakens through repeated exposure to the cue without the original consequence.

Why it matters

Extinction is the mechanism behind exposure therapy and much of what we call “getting used to it.” It is real, but it is fragile.

The Science

Extinction is not forgetting. It is new learning that competes with the original conditioning. This is why previously extinguished responses can return under stress.

The NSI Perspective

NSI teaches that extinction and reconsolidation are different mechanisms. Both can help; they operate on different logics.

Clinical Implications

Exposure-based treatments rely on extinction. Understanding its fragility helps clinicians anticipate relapse and plan accordingly.

Practical Application

If a fear you thought had extinguished returns, this is not failure. It is the ordinary imperfection of extinction learning.
