Definition

Exercise has a dose-dependent relationship with inflammation. Regular, moderate activity is anti-inflammatory overall; extreme or unaccustomed loads can transiently elevate inflammatory markers.

Why it matters

Exercise is one of the strongest modifiable inputs into inflammatory tone. Getting the dose right matters.

The Science

Contracting muscle releases myokines (e.g., IL-6 acting in a paradoxically anti-inflammatory pattern when acutely released from muscle), which influence metabolism, immunity, and mood. Regular activity is associated with lower resting inflammatory markers, better vaccine response, and lower risk of chronic inflammatory disease.

Clinical Implications
