Definition

Aerobic exercise is one of the most consistently supported interventions for brain health, cognition, mood, and neuroplasticity across the lifespan.

Why it matters

The exercise–brain connection has moved from suggestive to robust. Nearly every clinical population benefits.

The Science

Exercise increases BDNF, neurogenesis in the dentate gyrus, cerebral blood flow, and grey matter volume in hippocampus and prefrontal cortex. Meta-analyses show cognitive and mood benefits across age groups.
