Empathy

Empathy within social neuroscience — the science, the human experience, and why it belongs inside a Nervous System Intelligence framework.

Definition

Empathy is the capacity to sense and understand another person’s state. Contemporary neuroscience distinguishes affective empathy (feeling with), cognitive empathy (understanding), and compassion (motivated care).

Why it matters

Conflating these subtypes causes confusion. Some people have strong affective empathy but struggle with cognitive empathy, or the reverse. All are trainable.

The Science

Different neural systems support these subtypes, with overlap and distinctions across insular, ACC, medial prefrontal, and default mode regions. Compassion training (Singer, Ricard) shows measurable effects distinct from empathy training.

The NSI Perspective

NSI treats empathy as a family of skills, not a single fixed trait.

Clinical Implications

Clinician self-care requires developing compassion alongside empathy; unregulated affective empathy predicts burnout.

Practical Application

Feeling with someone is not the same as understanding them, and neither is the same as helping them. All three can be practiced.
