Definition

Emotional availability is the willingness and capacity to be present to another person’s emotional experience without withdrawing, taking over, or fixing. It is a specific and learnable skill.

Why it matters

People often talk about wanting connection without naming what they actually mean. Emotional availability names it.

The Science

Emotional availability is a measurable construct in developmental and couples research, associated with better outcomes across many domains.

The NSI Perspective

NSI treats emotional availability as a nervous-system capacity that can be practiced.

Clinical Implications

Both children’s and adults’ outcomes are shaped by the emotional availability of primary others.

Practical Application

Ask yourself: when someone I love is upset, do I stay, or do I leave (physically or emotionally)? Practice staying.
