Definition

From an NSI perspective, EMDR works through the coordinated engagement of memory, attention, body sensation, belief, and autonomic state — all within a relationship that provides safety and pacing.

Why it matters

This multi-channel framing captures more of what EMDR actually does than any single-mechanism explanation.

The Science

No single mechanism fully accounts for EMDR’s effects. Multiple channels contribute to the observed outcomes.

The NSI Perspective

NSI sees EMDR as an integrated intervention, not a technique. The technique is the vehicle; integration is the medicine.

Clinical Implications

Clinicians can hold multiple mechanisms simultaneously and use whichever framing helps a particular patient understand their own work.

Practical Application

If EMDR is working for you, do not worry about deciding which mechanism is doing the work. Multiple threads are likely weaving together.

How much of what you just read named something you already know inside your own body?

How much did this open a new question you didn’t have before?
