Definition

Diet and mood interact through blood sugar regulation, inflammatory tone, microbiome effects, micronutrient status, and social meaning. Effects are real but often modest and multi-causal.

Why it matters

Diet influences mood, and mood influences eating. Overstating either direction produces harmful advice.

The Science

Mediterranean-style dietary patterns have the most consistent evidence for modest mood benefits in depression. Individual nutrients (e.g., omega-3s, B12, iron, vitamin D) matter when deficient. Ultra-processed food intake is associated with worse mental-health outcomes in longitudinal studies.

The NSI Perspective

NSI holds diet as one meaningful input among many. Never the sole answer, rarely irrelevant.

Clinical Implications

Careful nutritional history is part of thorough psychiatric care. Deficiencies are treatable; general dietary quality matters.

Practical Application

You do not need a perfect diet to protect mood. A broadly good pattern, most days, meaningfully helps.
