Definition
Within Nervous System Intelligence, development is treated as a lifelong process shaped jointly by biology, relationship, environment, and experience — with continued plasticity, and without deterministic scripts.
Why it matters
This framing holds two truths at once. Early experience matters. Later experience also matters. Both must be honored.
The Science
Modern developmental science supports lifelong plasticity, gene–environment interaction, and the meaningful impact of intervention at every age. It also supports the reality that early experience is disproportionately formative in some domains.
The NSI Perspective
NSI holds four commitments in developmental care. First, early relationships matter. Second, they are not the whole story. Third, plasticity continues. Fourth, no one is reducible to their history.
Clinical Implications
Care that honors developmental context while refusing to trap a person in it is the standard of thoughtful practice.
Practical Application
Your beginnings matter, but they are not your ending. Your nervous system is still writing.
