Definition

Cooperation is coordinated behavior for mutual benefit. It is one of the defining features of human sociality and has deep evolutionary and neural roots.

Why it matters

Humans are extraordinary cooperators. Understanding what supports cooperation clarifies how groups, teams, and communities function — or fail.

The Science

Cooperation is supported by fairness circuitry (ACC, insula), reward circuitry, and reputation tracking. It flourishes with clear norms, communication, and consequences for defection.
