Definition

Context-dependent memory is the finding that recall is easier in the environment where encoding occurred. Room, posture, smell, and background sound can all serve as retrieval cues.

Why it matters

This principle has practical applications for testing, therapy, grief, and daily life. Where you are matters for what you can remember.

The Science

Godden and Baddeley’s classic diving experiments demonstrated the effect powerfully. It has since been replicated across many contexts.

The NSI Perspective

NSI treats context as a memory partner. Change of context can help or hinder retrieval, depending on what is being sought.

Clinical Implications

Sometimes returning to a location helps memory work. Sometimes leaving it does. Neither is universally right.

Practical Application

If you cannot remember something, return in your mind to where you were when it happened. Sometimes the context brings the memory.
