Definition

Constipation is influenced by autonomic tone. Chronic sympathetic dominance slows motility; parasympathetic activity restores it.

Why it matters

Chronic constipation is frequently under-explained. Naming the autonomic dimension broadens what care can address.

The Science

Colonic motility is regulated by intrinsic enteric circuits under strong parasympathetic influence. Stress, trauma, poor sleep, medications, and dehydration all contribute to chronic constipation. Pelvic floor dysfunction and metabolic conditions are also common contributors.

NSI treats constipation as a systems phenomenon — not a moral or willpower issue.

Clinical Implications

Effective care combines fiber, hydration, movement, autonomic regulation, and evaluation of medications and pelvic floor function.

Practical Application

If your bowels shut down in sustained stress, this is autonomic biology. Regulation practices are legitimate care.
