Definition
Communication under threat is what happens when nervous systems attempt to talk while their threat systems are activated. It rarely produces resolution and often produces harm.
Why it matters
The nervous system state of both people is often more important than the words being exchanged. Naming this reorganizes conflict.
The Science
Sympathetic activation reduces prefrontal capacity for perspective-taking, empathy, and complex language. Under threat, human beings tend toward attack, defense, withdrawal, or freeze — not productive dialogue.
The NSI Perspective
NSI treats regulated dialogue as a physiological achievement, not a personality trait.
Clinical Implications
Interventions that build the skill of pausing until nervous systems settle outperform interventions that push through activation.
Practical Application
When both of you are activated, the conversation is unlikely to go well. Time-outs with a plan to return are wisdom, not avoidance.
