Definition

Co-regulation is the mutual, dynamic use of relationships to help nervous systems find and maintain balance. It is a healthy feature of human physiology — not a symptom of insufficient independence.

Why it matters

Cultural narratives sometimes treat needing another person as weakness. Understanding co-regulation reframes reliance on relationship as ordinary biology.

The Science

Human infants develop autonomic regulation in relationship with caregivers, and adults continue to rely on relational cues to stabilize arousal throughout life.

The NSI Perspective

NSI teaches that autonomy and connection are not opposites. Healthy nervous systems use both.

Clinical Implications

Isolating clients as a treatment default can be harmful. Structured co-regulation is a legitimate clinical goal.

Practical Application

Identify the people whose presence steadies you. Spend time with them intentionally. This is not indulgence; it is physiology.
