Definition

The developing HPA axis, autonomic nervous system, and immune systems calibrate to the environment children grow up in. Chronic early stress produces lasting shifts in these systems.

Why it matters

This is one of the strongest biological bridges between early experience and adult health. Understanding it takes shame off the person and puts serious work into public health.

The Science

Longitudinal studies link chronic early stress to altered cortisol patterns, autonomic reactivity, and pro-inflammatory tone in adulthood. These shifts are modifiable to varying degrees through subsequent experience and treatment.

Clinical Implications

Trauma-informed care in childhood is preventive medicine. Trauma-informed care in adulthood is corrective medicine.
