Definition

Caregiving is an evolved behavioral system dedicated to protecting and nurturing vulnerable others. It is supported by specific neural, hormonal, and endocrine mechanisms distinct from other social systems.

Why it matters

Framing caregiving as its own evolved system — alongside attachment, sexual, and affiliative systems — clarifies its distinct needs and costs.

The Science

Caregiving involves oxytocin, prolactin, dopamine, and specific hypothalamic and cortical circuits. It shows sex, hormonal, and developmental modulation. Feldman’s work has extensively mapped the biology.

The NSI Perspective

NSI treats caregiving as sacred work of the nervous system — demanding, essential, and physiologically expensive.

Clinical Implications

Caregiver burnout is legitimate physiology. Supporting caregivers is preventive medicine.

Practical Application

If caring for someone has cost you, that is not weakness. Caregiving is a biological load, and it needs support.
