Definition

Autoimmune illness is a family of conditions in which the immune system misidentifies self as threat and mounts a sustained response against the body’s own tissues.

Why it matters

Autoimmune illness is common, biologically real, and frequently dismissed — especially in women. Naming it accurately and taking its neuroimmune context seriously improves both diagnosis and dignity.

The Science

Genetic vulnerability interacts with infectious, hormonal, microbiome, and environmental triggers. Chronic stress and trauma appear to be modifiable risk factors in several autoimmune conditions, likely via HPA and immune signaling pathways — but they are not the cause, and framing them as “the cause” is inaccurate.

The NSI Perspective

NSI holds autoimmune illness as a systemic condition of a protective system that has miscalibrated. Care must address biology first, and context with respect.

Clinical Implications

Comprehensive care includes rheumatology, immunology, sleep, movement, nutrition, stress regulation, and community. No single lens is enough.

Practical Application

If you live with an autoimmune condition, you are not causing it with your thoughts. You may, however, be able to influence its course through many small, real levers.
