Definition

Attention is a necessary precondition for most forms of plasticity. Passive exposure without attention rarely produces durable change; attentive engagement reliably does.

The Science

Attention modulates cortical plasticity in both animal and human studies. Merzenich’s classic work showed that only stimuli attended to produce cortical map changes; unattended stimuli did not.
