Definition
Attachment tells you how someone’s nervous system will relate under stress. Compatibility tells you whether your lives, values, and rhythms fit. Both matter, and they are not the same.
Why it matters
Confusing attachment fit with compatibility can lead people to stay in fundamentally mismatched relationships because the chemistry feels familiar — or to leave good relationships because the chemistry is quieter than expected.
The Science
Relationship research increasingly distinguishes these dimensions and finds that both contribute independently to long-term outcomes.
The NSI Perspective
NSI teaches both to be evaluated separately. Chemistry is one signal. Life fit is another.
Clinical Implications
Premarital and couples work benefits from making this distinction explicit.
Practical Application
Ask two questions about any relationship: does my nervous system feel safe here, and does my life fit here? Two different answers.
