Definition
Attachment styles shape how people grieve. Secure grievers tend to integrate loss over time; anxious grievers may prolong searching; avoidant grievers may minimize or delay; disorganized grievers may oscillate between extremes.
Why it matters
Grief looks different in different nervous systems. Recognizing this prevents pathologizing grief that does not follow an expected script.
The Science
Empirical work on complicated grief and attachment has identified systematic differences in grief trajectory by attachment orientation.
The NSI Perspective
NSI does not require grief to look one way. It attends to whether life can slowly resume its shape.
Clinical Implications
Grief work should be tailored to attachment history, not standardized.
Practical Application
If your grief looks different from someone else’s, that is not proof either of you is grieving wrong.
