Definition
Adult development is the study of how the nervous system, identity, relationships, and cognition continue to change through adulthood. Development is not childhood; it is lifelong.
Why it matters
Framing adulthood as a plateau underestimates the change that continues to happen — and can happen — in adult lives.
The Science
Longitudinal studies (e.g., the Grant Study, the Berkeley studies) document meaningful change in personality, relational patterns, cognition, and emotional regulation across adult life. Change tends to be gradual and context-sensitive.
The NSI Perspective
NSI holds adulthood as a series of developmental stages worth naming and supporting, not a static state.
Clinical Implications
Life-stage awareness (early adulthood, midlife transitions, later life) belongs in careful clinical work.
Practical Application
You are still becoming. That is not sentimentality — it is a research finding.
