The nervous system does not evaluate a place the way the mind does. It reads a specific vocabulary of environmental cues — visual complexity, non-threatening sound, moving water, soft light — and settles in response to some environments and remains vigilant in others. The evidence for the effect is now robust.

What the meta-analyses show

Time in green and blue environments is associated with reductions in cortisol, blood pressure, heart rate, and self-reported stress across meta-analyses of controlled studies. Effects are small-to-moderate at the individual level and consistent across methods.165,166,120

Mechanism: cues before cognition

The regulating effect is not merely mood — it appears within minutes and precedes conscious appreciation. The mechanism is a cluster of ambient cues the nervous system reads as low-threat: soft edges, movement without direction, sound without semantic content.26,158


§ 3

Home, room, and the everyday environment

The nervous system does not distinguish sharply between a forest and a well-designed room. Predictability, soft light, quiet surfaces, and the absence of alarm cues perform similar work. Environmental design is a legitimate bottom-up intervention.148,149
