Movement, Posture, and the Nervous System
How gentle motion, orienting, and posture shift autonomic state.
Movement is one of the oldest bottom-up interventions in existence. Muscular effort, rhythmic motion, and directed attention to the body change autonomic state through mechanisms that are only partially cognitive. Even small movements — orienting the head, softening the jaw, letting the shoulders drop — register faster than reappraisal.

Gentle movement and vagal tone
Yoga and yogic breathing consistently improve markers of autonomic regulation, interoceptive awareness, and mental-health outcomes in systematic reviews.98,24
Aerobic exercise supports mood, cognition, and neuroplasticity through BDNF-related pathways — an effect distinct from, but complementary to, immediate autonomic regulation.96,97,35

Orienting: a small but powerful intervention
Deliberate scanning of the environment — turning the head and eyes to notice what is actually here — recruits the neurological machinery the nervous system uses to determine safety. In clinical use, orienting reliably shifts autonomic state toward regulation.26

Progressive muscle relaxation
One of the oldest structured somatic interventions, PMR produces reliable reductions in physiological arousal across controlled studies. Its virtues are simplicity and portability.164
