Foundations of NSI — Module 01: Noticing
The first pillar of the Nirva Method.
Every skill in the Nirva Method depends on Noticing. This module introduces noticing as the first pillar of Nervous System Intelligence: what it is, what it isn’t, why it precedes every other move, and how to train it deliberately over a week of small, repeated practice.

§ 1 · Learning objectives
By the end of this module you will be able to: (1) describe noticing as an autonomic and attentional skill distinct from analysis or mindfulness; (2) identify the earliest signals your nervous system uses to indicate a state shift; (3) demonstrate three structured noticing practices; (4) recognise common obstacles to noticing and the corrective for each.

§ 2 · Core concept
Noticing is the deliberate turning of attention toward internal state — interoceptive signal, autonomic tone, attentional bandwidth — before any interpretation, analysis, or judgement of that state is made.10,12,91
Noticing is distinct from mindfulness in that it does not require sustained attention over long periods; it requires accurate attention for a moment. It is distinct from analysis in that it does not attempt to explain the state; it attempts to describe it.76,77
Noticing is the first of six steps in the Nirva Method — Notice, Interrupt, Identify, Regulate, Validate, Align — because every subsequent step depends on it. A pattern that has not been noticed cannot be interrupted; a state that has not been noticed cannot be regulated.

§ 4 · Practice exercise A — Interoceptive check-in (5 min, daily)
At the same time each day, pause for two full breaths. Then internally answer, in the third person: “The nervous system is currently: (a) settled, (b) activated, (c) shut-down, (d) not sure.” Do not analyse. Simply notice.
The purpose is not to change state but to build interoceptive vocabulary. Interoceptive accuracy is trainable, and daily brief practice is more effective than occasional long practice.91,10

§ 5 · Practice exercise B — Earliest signal (5 min, whenever activated)
When you notice you are activated, pause. Ask: “What was the first small signal that this state was beginning? Was it a thought, a sensation, a change in breath, a change in gaze?” Write the earliest signal down.
Over one week you will begin to see that the same 2–4 earliest signals recur. These are the leading indicators your nervous system uses. Learning them is the beginning of interruption.

§ 6 · Practice exercise C — Third-person description (2 min, evenings)
Before sleep, describe one moment of the day in the third person: “Today the nervous system was in _____ when _____.” No editing, no performance. This is noticing rendered into language.
Language is not merely descriptive; it is an autonomic intervention. Third-person description reduces identification with the state and makes it easier to observe.

§ 7 · Common obstacles
Obstacle 1: turning noticing into analysis. Corrective: describe rather than explain.
Obstacle 2: turning noticing into judgement. Corrective: replace “why did I feel that” with “what was here just before.”
Obstacle 3: expecting noticing to change the state. Corrective: noticing is the foundation, not the intervention. Change is what follows.

• What state was your nervous system most often in this week?
• Which earliest signal appeared most frequently?
• What surprised you about naming your state in the third person?
• Where in your day is noticing hardest? What are the ambient conditions of that context?

§ 9 · What comes next
Module 02 of Foundations of NSI introduces the second step of the Nirva Method: Interrupt. Noticing is the prerequisite; interruption is the next skill to build once noticing is reliable. The transition is intentional — you cannot interrupt what you have not first noticed.
