Foundations 02 — Module 02: The Closeness-Avoidance Pattern
The reflex that runs when connection increases.
The closeness-avoidance pattern is not indifference. It is the specific physiological reflex that surfaces when connection increases and produces the internal search for exit — conflict, distraction, small distance-making moves — without conscious intent.
§ 1
§ 1 · Learning objectives
By the end you will: (1) recognise the autonomic signature that precedes distance-making behaviour; (2) name the specific priors most often driving closeness-avoidance; (3) execute a titrated exposure to closeness; (4) understand the attachment substrate without pathologising it.
§ 2
§ 2 · Recognising the pattern
§ 3
§ 3 · The autonomic signature
§ 4
§ 4 · Common priors
“Closeness precedes harm.” “If you know me, you will leave.” “Need is dangerous.” The prior is often relational-specific and was encoded when the person had no other options.
§ 5
§ 5 · Core readings (approx. 25 min)
• Patterns in Love and Attachment (Library article)
• Co-Regulation and the Safe Other (Library article)
• Trauma Patterns and Adult Choice (Library article)
§ 6
§ 6 · Practice exercise A — Micro-doses of sustained contact
§ 7
§ 7 · Practice exercise B — Naming the exit
When you notice the impulse to make distance, name it in third person before acting on it. “A closeness-avoidance pattern is running.” Do not force yourself to stay; force yourself to name.
§ 8
§ 8 · Common obstacles
Obstacle 1: interpreting the pattern as lack of love. Corrective: the pattern is protective, not diagnostic of feeling.
Obstacle 2: pushing through the discomfort. Corrective: pushing produces flooding. Titration produces plasticity.
§ 9
§ 9 · What comes next
Module 03 addresses The Perfection Pattern — the reflex to make what you produce, and who you are, immune to critique. Different mechanism; same six-step approach.
