Foundations 02 — Module 01: The Overwork Pattern
Applying the Method to protection wearing the costume of productivity.
The overwork pattern is difficult because it is rewarded. External achievement confirms the underlying prediction that safety is contingent on output. This module applies the six-step Method to a pattern most people are actively encouraged to keep running.
§ 1
§ 1 · Learning objectives
By the end you will: (1) recognise the autonomic signature of the overwork pattern; (2) name the priors most often driving it; (3) execute a titrated intervention that does not require abandoning ambition; (4) design an environmental change that reduces the pattern’s pull.
§ 2
§ 2 · Recognising the pattern
The pattern is not “working hard.” It is the specific physiological arrangement in which rest produces its own alarm, achievement produces temporary relief rather than satisfaction, and slowing feels dangerous.67,66
The clearest diagnostic is what happens when the work stops. If rest triggers scanning, restlessness, or subtle dread, the ambition is likely doubling as regulation.
§ 3
§ 3 · The autonomic signature
§ 4
§ 4 · Common priors
“Love is tied to output.” “Rest is unsafe.” “If I stop, I fall.” “My value is my usefulness.” Naming the specific prior is more useful than the general behaviour.
§ 5
§ 5 · Core readings (approx. 20 min)

• Safety Is Not Comfort (Library article)
• When Safety Feels Unsafe (Library article)
§ 6
§ 6 · Practice exercise A — The rest experiment
One deliberate window of ten minutes per day in which you do not produce output. No podcast, no reading, no goal. Note what the nervous system does. Not to change it — to see it.
The exercise is diagnostic. What appears in the ten minutes is the material the pattern has been managing.
§ 7
§ 7 · Practice exercise B — The unbundled ambition (weekly)
At week’s end, list three things you did that week purely because you wanted to — not to prove, not to earn, not to insulate. If the list is empty, the ambition and the regulation have not yet been unbundled.
§ 8
§ 8 · Common obstacles
Obstacle 1: treating overwork as an identity to defend. Corrective: the ambition is not the pattern; the physiological need under it is.
Obstacle 2: swinging to under-working. Corrective: the goal is not less output. It is unbundled output.
§ 9
§ 9 · What comes next
Module 02 addresses The Closeness-Avoidance Pattern — the physiological reflex that surfaces when connection increases. The mechanism is different; the six-step approach is the same.
