The pause before the reply
A colleague pinged me at 6.42 pm about a deadline I had already met. My chest tightened; the old script started forming — defend, explain, over-apologise. This time I noticed the tightening before I noticed the reply. Waited two breaths. Answered with one sentence. The room did not fall apart. The tightening did.

What my mother used to do
Recognised today that when I clean, I clean the way my mother cleaned. Fast, silent, alert to interruption, resentful of anyone who did not notice it was happening. That is not cleaning. Regulate is a doorway, not a destination
Ten minutes of the R practice this morning. First minute my head was already three emails ahead. Second minute I named it. Third minute my shoulders remembered they were shoulders. Nothing dramatic.
